Hair Heroes Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Rihanna and Jessie J Prove It's Time To Wig Out

There's an awful lot of hair on the red carpet these days. And none of it real. At what point did wigs become as ubiquitous as Swarovski and slits?

Pretty much the time that Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Jessie J took over the chart. All three are fans of augmenting/altering their hair with wigs and/or clip-ons and are currently the most photographed celebrities at time of press. This goes some way to explain why hairpieces - flamboyant or natural - are fast becoming de rigeur for fashion-forward women the world over who want to road-test a trend – say pink rinse – without bleaching and rose-tinting their hair.

Hair Heroes Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Rihanna and Jessie J Prove It's Time To Wig Out

Lady Gaga arriving at Brisbane Airport today

"The wig business now is crazy ... it's just exploding," French wig maker Julien d'Ys recently told LA Times Magazine. Renowned for his somewhat avant-garde hairpieces, as seen in Vogue and Vanity Fair, he should know. The Parisian-based designer has collaborated with designers such as Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel, and also cites the catwalk trend for ‘uniform’ models as a case in point.

So what to wear: nowadays, the ubiquity of wigs on the high street means you can pick up one up from around £25. A tenner from your local market. Woefully synthetic, yes, but a great way to temporarily dip dye your tresses.

Ditto lace-front wigs - full wigs made from either natural or synthetic hair sewn onto a delicate mesh lace base - as favoured by Beyoncé and Shakira.  These, however, retail at a fair whack more (the very best can go for up to £8,000) so maybe an actual trip to the hairdresser is more in order.

So wigs - the pluses are multiple: you can match your hair to an outfit, switch your look to be on-trend the moment it does and trial bangs without actually commitment. But outside of a hen party, would you dare to wear?

Jessica Chastain Bags Her First Campaign For Yves Saint Laurent's New Fragrance, Manifesto

Another exciting snippet of news today for you peeps! Yves Saint Laurent have announced the face of their new fragrance, Manifesto, and it’s none other than beautiful actress Jessica Chastain. We’re beyond excited to see the flame-haired beauty bag her first ever campaign, not least because she will be the first red-head to appear in the brand’s ads since Sophie Dahl. You'll remember our Sophie appeared naked in THAT controversial shot for Opium fragrance and showcased little more than porcelain-perfect skin, foxy orange hair and striking green eyeshadow.

Jessica, who came onto our radar thanks to films like the Tree Of Life, The Help and The Debt, was chosen by YSL’s international general manager Stephan Bezy because of her free mind and charm. 'We were won over by the very subtle strength of Jessica Chastain, her solar charm, her free mind,' he said. 'She embodies the quintessence of Saint Laurent’s femininity, a woman of her day and age, independent, determined, never where you expect her to be.' Well said, Stephan!

The Manifesto fragrance will launch in September in France and should make its way to stores across Europe by the end of the year before heading to the United States in early 2013. Aside from Ms Chastain, we are beyond excited for a new YSL scent. The name Manifesto in fact comes from one of the brand’s photo periodicals started by former creative director Stefano Pilati so this one should be a winner! Can we expect another saucy shot starring the gorgeous Jessica?

Karl Largerfeld Collaborates With Beauty Brand Shu Uemura

Yes it’s grey and rainy and yes we are bored of this weather now but what’s putting a massive grin on our faces this morning is news just in that Karl Largerfeld is set to collaborate with one of our all-time fave skincare brands Shu Uemura. Squel, shriek, yelp! Yep, for Christmas 2012 Mr Largerfeld will be creating an exclusive collection for the brand following a long-standing friendship and relationship of mutual admiration of over 20 years between himself and Mr. Uemura.

A meeting between two of the fashion and beauty world’s most highly respected talents, we think this is nothing short of our ultimate dream collaboration. Karl has always been fond of using Shu Uemura’s pressed eye shadows to sketch with (how chic!) and it seems that the partnership was a natural move for the duo. “I love sketching in the morning,” Karl said, “When I go to sleep I always put my pens and papers next to my bed. I use Shu Uemura shadows to sketch, since they are such fantastic colours. I design with Shu Uemura make-up because other manufacturers do not offer such beautiful colours.” Spot on King Karl, we couldn’t agree more.

The two bonded over their untiring quest for innovation and beauty. After all, it was the legendary Mr Uemura that transformed the image of women through makeup and turned beauty into a true work of art. Similarly Mr Largerfeld’s illustrious career as a fashion designer, photographer, curator, you name it, has made him a global sensation in his own right. Yikes, we’re not sure we can wait until Christmas to see it though…

Givenchy & Riccardo Tisci launch new fragrance in Milan Grazia Daily was there!

Yesterday in Milan, Grazia Daily attended the launch of the brand new Givenchy fragrance in Milan – something we've been looking forward to for ages, because it’s been created by Givenchy creative director, Riccardo Tisci.

NOW, as you fash-fans will already know, fashion houses can have complicated relationships with their namesake fragrances – often, the house doesn’t own the license for the scent, and so it’s unusual for a brand’s creative director to be involved in the creation of the fragrance. For Givenchy, this fragrance is the first since 1957 (when Hubert Givenchy created ‘Interdit’) that the label’s director has been involved in the production of a scent. And it is QUITE something.

The new scent is called ‘Dahlia Noir’, so named because it’s a flower which doesn’t exist and has no fragrance (dahlias have no fragrance, and the black dahlia is a mythical flower) thus becoming a blank canvas for a new fragrance. With notes of rose, musk, patchouli and amber, if you could bottle ‘expensive’, then it would smell something like this. There's an eau de parfam which is slightly muskier, and a fresher version in the eau de toilette.

The bottle is a classic design (so minimal that the name of the fragrance is hidden under the cap) and there’s a limited edition crystal version to be released in the summer. In true Givenchy style, the scent and packaging are all about ‘private luxury’, according to the Givenchy global president Thierry Maman – in that it’s not about showing off or bling.

The gorgeous Ricccardo was on hand at yesterday’s launch, as was Mariacarla Boscono – heavily pregnant, but utterly gorgeous and charming. ‘I’ve known Riccardo for fifteen years’ she told us. ‘I probably shouldn’t say that – it makes me sound old, but I’m over that kind of thing’.

Dahlia Noir is released in the UK in September.

Florence Welch and Candice Swanepoel Work This Season's Halo Hair Trend

Oooh here in the beauty department we have been enjoying a right old love affair with halo-style braids this summer. It all began back at the spring summer 2012 Valentino show, where beauty editors swooned at the halo braids wrapped around models' heads, before racing one another to the nearest hairdresser.

Before long, the style had appeared perched a-top the heads of Scarlett Johansson and Poppy Delevigne too. Then there was Cannes where the delightful Kirsten Dunst opted for a very similar style which incorporated twists rather than plaits and was enhanced by some rather marvellous metalwork headgear courtesy of Dolce & Gabbana's Autumn Winter 2012 collection which gave the actress an oh-so-pretty and almost regal edge.

This week our ever beady eyes have spotted that there are now even more ladies signing up for the halo hair gang. In addition to a whopping three of the Grazia Beauty team planning to sport the look at upcoming weddings this summer, Florence Welch and Candice Swanepoel, of Victoria’s Secret fame, have also been dabbling with the trend; the former wrapping her luscious auburn braids around her head Heidi style and the latter going for a half up, half down version.

Backstage stylist supreme Guido Palau, who just so happens to be the man behind the Valentino braid, explains exactly why these ethereal styles are so appealing and youth inducing. ‘This style’s huge appeal lies in the fact that it captures the perfect balance between effortless chic and Hollywood glamour,' he says. 'The secret to success lies in creating a roughed-up texture and embracing flyaways so it isn’t too perfect.’

So what are your thoughts on this brand new breed of hair? And will you be giving it a go?

Does This Beauty Shoot Glamorise Violence Against Women?

Does This Beauty Shoot Glamorise Violence Against Women?

Her hair is perfectly curled, her make up is immaculate… and her black eye is horrifying. This controversial shot from Bulgarian magazine 12, is, bizarrely, for a beauty shoot. But is it really art… or is it simply glamorising domestic violence?

The other images in the magazine editorial, entitled Victim of Beauty, show one model with her throat cut and another with a badly bruised face. One particularly gruesome shot, highlighted by Fashionista, shows a woman with her mouth ripped open.

Hmmm, hardly beautiful… especially when violence against women is so prolific. One woman is raped every nine minutes in Britain; two women are killed every week in England and Wales by a current or former partner… and one in four women will suffer domestic abuse at some point in their lives.

It’s not the first time violence against women has been used to promote products. Last year, Tyler Shields (who recently set fire to a Birkin bag in the name of art) photographed a model dressed as a housewife and sporting a black eye. And another controversial editorial showed 15-year-old Hailey Clauson being ‘strangled.’

There is no explanation in the Bulgarian magazine for the most recent controversial images. But under the editorial it reads, ‘Recommended Parental Controls: pictures are not recommended for persons under 16 years. And for the faint hearted.’

Which begs the question, why put them in the magazine at all?

Katy Perry Goes Without Make-Up for her New Film 'Part of Me'

Katy Perry is no stranger to the barefaced beauty debate – After all, who could forget the occasion that her ex-husband Russell Brand so famously tweeted that erm, somewhat unflattering picture of the singer half-asleep in the middle of the night?  Needless to say that Miss Perry was livid and the picture disappeared from twitter only hours later…

Now however, Katy is showing that she has few qualms about people seeing her in an unmade state, when she is calling the shots and completely awake of course!  In her upcoming 3D film documentary Part of Me, a realistic account of her life which is rumoured to briefly document her brief marriage to Brand, Katy steps out without makeup on more than one occasion, showing that appearing on-screen without makeup is a key part of revealing her 'true self.'

‘I took my makeup off! Oh, everyone is screaming around the world, 'The horror,’ she has commented.  But the singer isn’t afraid to let people see the 'real her.'  ‘Look, I don't always want to look bloated with zits, but it's real, it's human, right? We're not always so pretty, and sometimes that can bring people together.’  A clever move on the part of the singer perhaps, when you bear in mind that awkward, embarrassing situations often create a vulnerability which makes an individual appear more endearing and appealing!

'When you see the film, it’s a bit scary because there’s a lot of shots of me bloated with zits and normal,' says Katy, 'I think it’s important to start breaking down the idea that to achieve your dream you always have to be perfect or flawless or live in some kind of fantasy world which is why I decided to put everything into the film.'

What do you think about Katy going without makeup and would you give it a go? Check out our gallery of other celebs who have been snapped without their slap too!

Mary Kate Olsen Embraces the Dark Side With New Brunette Hair at the CFDA Awards

We all know Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are terribly fashionable, they know how to design a pretty frock and even picked up the Womenswear Designer of the Year accolade at the CFDA Awards. Bravo! They're also indistinguishable and we've spent many an hour trying to decipher which twin is which.

So how helpful that one half of the duo has set herself apart by dying her blonde locks a rich brunette. Yep, Mary-Kate debuted her fresh new hair-do at the ceremony on Monday night ensuring that not only did she make an impact alongside sister Ashley but she stood out amongst a sea of sunny Californian blondes.

Mary Kate Olsen Embraces the Dark Side With New Brunette Hair at the CFDA Awards

The actress-turned-designer’s new colour is a sophisticated chocolate brown and doesn't it bring out those gorgeous green eyes of hers? At the Met Ball last month, M-K was looking particuarly washed-out with her verging-on-granny-grey tresses scraped into a messy bun [above right] so we say this sleek update is a mighty improvement, don't you?

And we wonder whether her hair transformation has something to do with the twin's new beau. It emerged last week that Mary-Kate is dating Olivier Sarkozy - yep, that's the half-brother of ex-French president Nicolas, no less. Could she be aiming for a more mature approach now that she's with an older man? One thing's for sure, it's made our lives easier.

Cheryl Cole, Jessie J and Leighton Meester Work Pretty Ponytails For The Jubilee

Pony tails are arguably the style of the season.  Forget all of your preconceptions of the ponytail as a speedy solution to a bad hair day and get ready to embrace it as the summer’s most fashion-forward do.  In fact, there is nowhere where this was more evident than on this season’s catwalks, where the not-so-humble ponytail made appearances at more than 30 shows from London to Paris, New York and Milan, proving that the style is far more versatile than we had previously thought. There were swishy ones at Balmain, slouchy cool-girl ones at Aquascutum, smart leather-bound ones at Hermes, and sleek, glossy ones at Donna Karen to name but a few.

The ponies at Hermes, Balmain and Donna Karen

Session stylist extraordinaire and Grazia fave Zoe Irwin explains that the only secret to working this season’s pony is to keep it seriously glossy and luxurious looking.  “This season’s ponytail is a show pony, it’s about shiny, swishy expensive looking hair,” she explains.  “A straggly excuse for a tail just won't do, so be sure to arm yourself with an ample styling kit, including a shine-inducing shampoo as well as a root lifting product to add in some serious oomph.”

And many of our fave celebsville inhabitants have been out in force working their individual takes over the extra long (wasn't it wonderful?) Jubilee weekend.  At the Jubilee Concert on Monday, Jessie J worked a sleek, slicked back style for her performance with Will.i.am while Cheryl Cole tried a tousled take on the trend for her time on stage with Gary Barlow.

Mandy Moore and Jessica Stam both choose high, swishy versions at the CFDA Fashion Awards in New York, while Leighton Meester paired hers with bangs at the MTV Music awards. Oh, and don't tell anyone a soul but we’re secretly longing for K-Middy to take on the Hermes pony with her think luscious locks. Wouldn't she look lovely?  Which one will you be working?

Jubilee Palette Fit For A Queen!

Right peeps, Jubilee countdown is officially on and this week we will be gearing up to the big day with a daily post of wonderfully Brit-themed products. Today is a pretty good one and you might even think it'll be hard to beat, but don’t you worry, we have many a treat in store for you to feast your eyes on…

Today we bring you Estee Lauder’s Limited Edition Jewelled Flag of Britain, £320. And isn't it truly wonderful? It aint cheap but it’s pretty darn gorgeous and how many times des a Royal Jubilee rears it's head? Not often. Inside is a solid perfume of their Beautiful fragrance, a deep mix of romantic Queen-worthy notes like lily, tuberose and cassis (we have it on good authority that tuberose is in fact one of Elizabeth's fave smells). Mrs. Estee Lauder originally designed the fragrance with the desire of making the wearer feel like she was the loveliest woman in the room and we think that ethos is very suited to such a special occasion as this. AND, the outside is emblazoned with wonderful Swarovski crystals! 130 of them in fact, all of which are hand-crafted by artisans schooled in fine jewellery making. Wow, sounds right up Lizzie’s street doesn’t it…

Visit www.esteelauder.co.uk to get your hands on this gorgeous royal souvenir.

How To Jubilee-Up Your Beauty Look Like Diane Kruger, Kirsten Dunst and Cheryl Cole

In this week’s special issue of Grazia, we get in the Jubilee spirit by celebrating some serious diamond shine courtesy of this summer’s newest beauty frosting.  And guess what? We’re not the only ones testing the princessy trend. From Cheryl Cole's glossy locks to Diane Kruger's shimmering eyeshadow, have a click through the gallery above to see which stars have been getting involved in royal beauty. And below, we tell you how to give it a go for your weekend celebrations…

Add a Little Extra Frosting!

Just be sure to bear in mind that a little goes a very long way.  Keep your crystal cut shimmer to one area only and let that bling begin.  Nails, eyelids, lips and cheeks are all up for grabs.  We love mixing our foundation with a luminous pearlescent base – It will mean that the light can catch you from any angle. Our faves have got to be MAC Strobe Cream, £21.50 and Clarins Beauty Flash Balm, £28 – both work a treat. You can also try patting a highlighter like Stila All Over Shimmer, £16 onto temples and cheek bones for some seriously high-shine. On the other hand, a sleek, shiny pearlescent shadow will offer a quick fix solution to sparkling bright eyes.  Bourjois Paris Light Eyeshadows, £3.49 are just the thing.

Get a Royal Flush!

A truly royal glow comes from within girls so get that skin glowing with the latest primers, polishers and skin-finishers.  Luckily for you we have tried them all! Giorgio Armani Luminessence Bright Regenerator Complex, £105 brightens lacklustre skin in tip top time while Carita’s Diamond Anti-Aging Precious Cream, £430 combines tourmaline and diamond extracts with plant minerals to achieve light, bright, luminous skin.  Primers are another easy way to get this glow and prep skin pre-makeup.  FashionistA Flawless Primer, £10 is a Grazia fave.

It’s Time for Princessy Hair!

Hair should dazzle with gloss so be sure to choose shine-boosting shampoos and serums to achieve a high shine gloss without overweighing hair and leaving it limp and lackluster. Pureology’s Purify Shampoo, £13.85 is a sulphate- free clarifying shampoo which leaves hair squeaky clean, while L’Oreal’s Nutri-Gloss Crystal Sparkling Conditioner, £2.69 does exactly what it say on the tin. Finally achieve salon quality shine chez vous with a shine boosting serum like Jo Hansford Expert Colour Care Illuminoil, £29 which also happens to help split ends too.

Well what are you waiting for? Get glowing girls!

Kate Middleton's Wow Brow: Eyebrow Kit Sales Soar 60 Per Cent Thanks to the Duchess

Kate Middleton's Wow Brow: Eyebrow Kit Sales Soar 60 Per Cent Thanks to the Duchess of Cambridge

Kate Middleton continues to influence the style of the nation but it’s not just her wardrobe that’s changing the shopping habits of women. Her classic beauty features are making headlines too. Apparently, the Duchess’s eyebrows have also caused a spike in the sales of eyebrow kits, with darkening products up by a whopping 60%!

With her heavily groomed and manicured brows, Kate’s beauty look has been the subject of many a debate.  Are they tattooed?  Are they too much like ‘the Scouse Brow’ as seen on Coleen Rooney and her fellow Liverpool ladies? Or is K-Middy setting a new, defined brow trend?

Stepping out at the Diamond Jubilee garden party yesterday in the same Emilia Wickstead dress she sported only two weeks ago, Kate may have raised some, err, eyebrows in the fashion world but the Duchess kept her calm, keeping her brows firmly groomed.  Straight, full and defined, the DoC is definitely sporting a Wow Now Brow.

So if you fancy a bit of brow maintenance, we suggest you try some of these Grazia Daily-approved brow pros...

Blink Brow Bars are THE Brow specialists when it comes to tinting, threading and getting those brows into shape.

Le Sourcil de Chanel has three powders to get the best match to your brows, two applicators and some mini tweezers all in one clever cute compact!    In fact it’s so sought, there’s a permanent waiting list!

Givenchy Mister Eyebrow Pencil is the master at keeping brows in check.  Once you’ve sculpted, shaped and darkened, make sure they don’t move with a quick slick of this brow hero.

Manicurist Jenny Longworth Demonstrates How to do a Diamond Jubilee Manicure

We love super-cool Revlon Nail Ambassador and general manicure maestro Jenny Longworth - in fact, it's probably true to say that if there’s something about nails that this lady doesn't know, it's just not worth knowing.  As a special jubilee treat to you lovely lot, Jenny has put together a detailed step-by-step guide on how to get gorgeous Diamond Jubilee nails.  Prepare to get creative girls - you know you want to!

Before you start you will need:

  • Basecoat
  • Revlon Nail Enamel in Fashionista
  • Revlon Nail Enamel in Gold Coin
  • Topcoat
  • A fine nail brish or cocktail stick

1) Begin by applying that basecoat - This will help the nail varnish adhere to your nails, prevent staining and give your manicure oodles of extra staying power - Perfect for a four day bank holiday weekend right?

2) Next sweep a layer of Fashionista Nail Enamel over the nail.  Jenny recommends aiming to do this in three strokes; one down the middle of the nail and two down the sides.

3) After a couple of minutes drying time take a very fine nail brush or cocktail stick and start the detail with the Gold Coin Nail Enamel.  Avoid overloading the colour on the stick or brush and blot away any excess on a tissue.  To create the crowns begin with the line at the base of the crown before doing three sweeping loops above it and finishing with a cross on topn. Aim for about 4 crowns per nail with less on your pinkie finger.

4) Once you have completed all of the crowns leave your nails to dry for a little while before gently 'floating' the topcoat over the top of your design to prevent dragging any of the crowns that are still slightly wet, seal the colour and add buckets of high shine.

5) And there you have the finished article, which we think is quite erm, fit for a queen don’t you?

Red, White and Blue: Jessie J's Beauty Look Is Fit For A Queen

Red, White and Blue: Jessie J's Beauty Look Is Fit For A Queen Red, White and Blue: Jessie J's Beauty Look Is Fit For A Queen

Would you check out Jessie J out and about in London today! Inspired by gracing the cover of Grazia's Jubilee issue (obvs), the singer is certainly getting into the spirit of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations with her modern take on the red lip. Rather than a pillar box scarlet, she's opted for a shade that has a subtle purpley-blue undertone for bonus royal beauty points.

We’d also like to point out THAT fringe. Not only is it a perfect example of bullet proof, shiny hair, we just love how it hangs with not a fly-away in sight. And with those long tresses to match, the hair-do frames her pretty face so precisely. Teamed with a bright blue jacket and a snazzy monochrome jumpsuit, our Jessie sure is flying the flag for Great Britain. Hurrah!

Red, White and Blue: Jessie J's Beauty Look Is Fit For A Queen

So can we expect a similar look when the starlet performs at the Queen's Jubilee concert on Monday? Here's hoping there'll be a nod to the patriotic spirit with some blue tips on her black locks, another fabtastic nail art manicure OR might she pull out that wicked Union Jack lip again? Go on Jess, do it for HRH.

Cara Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn and Edie Campbell Are Burberry's New Beauties

Cara Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn and Edie Campbell Are Burberry's New Beauties

Keep it on the down low girls, but here in the Grazia Beauty Department we do like to think of ourselves as Burberry girls (if they don’t mind so very much).  And no, it’s most definitely not that we fancy ourselves as the next Rosie Huntington Whitely or Cara Delevingne, but rather that the brand's irresistible selection of beauty offerings - from the sheer nude lip colours to the soft tawny shadows, English rose-esque blushers and super-soft eyeliners fulfil so very perfectly each and every one of our beauty needs.

With this in mind, we are particularly excited by the brand new Burberry Beauty advertising campaign, which has been revealed first thing this morning. Featuring the super-duper gorgeous Jourdan Dunn, Edie Campbell and yes, Miss Delevingne as the Burberry Beauties for Autumn Winter 2012, it’s just about everything that you would expect from the brand.  Wearing enviable trenches and with effortless and oh-so-natural makeup, it’s very friendly on the eye!
